Verizon G3100: How to Configure the Router You Already Have - 2026

Nearly every guide about the Verizon G3100 is written to convince you to get rid of it. Bypass the Verizon router (G3100), buy your own, return the box, stop paying the rental fee.
I didn’t do that. The G3100 is still in my closet, still in the chain, and it earns its spot for a reason almost nobody writes about: it’s my Wi-Fi failover. When the Araknis network goes down, the Verizon SSID is still broadcasting and we can simply switch over to the default Verizon G3100 Wi-Fi.
This is a guide to configuring the router you already have — including the case for leaving it exactly where it is.
The one thing I’d actually spend money on before a new router is Wi-Fi coverage, because separating the radios from the routing is what made the G3100’s mediocre Wi-Fi stop mattering here. The retail equivalent of the wired access points I run:

My Setup, Honestly
- ONT model: Alcatel-Lucent I-211M-K
- Fios plan: 1 Gbps
- ONT handoff: Ethernet (already active — not coax)
- Chain: ONT → G3100 → Araknis router → Araknis managed switch → wired APs
- G3100 firmware: 3.7.0.5 (hardware 1104)
- G3100 Wi-Fi: left on, deliberately — see the failover section
- TV service: YouTube TV and streaming services
- Apartment: ~1,550 square feet, NYC
I mention the firmware version because it determines which settings you’ll actually see. Forum threads on this router contradict each other constantly, and most of the contradiction is people describing different firmware without saying so.
The Failover Case: Why the G3100 Stays
This is the part I haven’t seen written anywhere, and it’s the reason my setup looks “wrong” to anyone optimizing purely for network purity.
A prosumer setup has more failure modes than a single ISP router. Controller updates, AP firmware, a switch reboot, a config change made at 11pm. When any of that takes the Araknis-side Wi-Fi down, the G3100’s SSID is still up and still connected upstream — so phones roam onto it and my wife and I don’t complain (too much).
One of the APs has recently been giving us difficulties. It flashes orange and I couldn’t figure out why. The fix, which I am not a fan of, was switching it to a new port in my 48-port switch. The reason I am hesitant about this solution is the 48-port switch isn’t cheap and all ports should be working. However, since I switched ports the AP has been a solid green. In the few weeks prior to moving the ethernet cable from one port to another, I just kept defaulting to my G3100 Wi-Fi. I am not saying this is the correct permanent setup, and I am open to modifying this — but as a novice, I like the fallback option.

- A second Wi-Fi network competing for airtime in the same space.
- The rental fee, if you’re renting.
- Double-NAT, unless you’ve configured around it. See below.
How Wi-Fi actually works in my apartment
My laptop is wired — plugged into the Ethernet port via a dongle — so Wi-Fi is off on it entirely and none of this applies there. My iPhone is the device that actually matters here, and it’s on the G3100’s default Verizon_RL6C7P SSID, not the Araknis network.
That wasn’t a plan. I set out to run everything on internetOfxxx (xxx is just default, not a sinister name), the Araknis SSID, like the rest of the household. But the AP side had reliability issues — as I mentioned, not realizing it was a port in the switch — so my phone ended up back on the G3100 essentially by default, and it just stayed there because it worked.
The result is a setup I didn’t design on purpose but wouldn’t undo: the one device I actually carry around and rely on for things like two-factor codes and being reachable is sitting on a network with no dependency on the AP mesh at all. If the Araknis side has a bad day, my phone never notices, because I moved it to the G3100 Wi-Fi.
On firmware 3.7.0.5, the G3100 has no channel or power tuning available — factory SSID, band-steered across all three radios, WPA2, left exactly as configured out of the box. There was nothing to tune even if I wanted to.
Configuring the G3100 Itself
Everything below is at 192.168.1.1, on firmware 3.7.0.5 (hardware 1104), as of May 6, 2026. Version and date matter — see above.
What I actually configured
Short answer: almost nothing. The SSID, Wi-Fi password, and WPA2 setting are all still factory default. Guest Network, IoT Network, and Parental Controls have never been touched. No firewall rules, port forwarding, or DMZ configuration — the G3100 has been running exactly as it came out of the box since it went into the closet.
That’s not an oversight I’m confessing to; it’s consistent with how this router is actually used here. It’s not the router doing the interesting work in this apartment — the Araknis handles routing, firewall, and segmentation, and the G3100 is deliberately left as a dumb, unmanaged Wi-Fi source that my iPhone happens to sit on. There was nothing to tune because nothing about its job requires tuning.
The one thing I’d actually change: the admin login itself is still on Verizon’s default credentials, which I’m fixing as a result of writing this article. That’s the genuine, unglamorous security gap in a setup like this — not the Wi-Fi config or the admin panel.
Channel and band settings: covered above — this firmware doesn’t expose manual control over either, so there was no decision to make here either way.
Double-NAT: What It Actually Costs Me
Running the Araknis behind the G3100 means two devices doing NAT — confirmed, not assumed. The Araknis’s WAN interface pulls a private address (192.168.1.151) from the G3100 rather than a public one, so this isn’t double-NAT in theory, it’s double-NAT in practice, sitting on my own network.
Every guide to this router lists the same set of theoretical symptoms. Rather than repeat them, here’s what actually happens on this line:

The honest verdict: double-NAT has cost me nothing so far, because nothing in how I actually use this network stresses it. No console to hit strict-NAT issues. The one VPN I use works fine, just slower — expected overhead, not a fault. No forwarding rules, ever, because I’ve never had a reason to open one. And I can’t claim a remote-access problem I haven’t tested, since there’s nothing behind the router to reach yet.
If You Do Want to Replace It Later
I’m not ruling this out. If you’re internet-only, the option is genuinely open: the ONT terminates the fiber, the G3100 is only a router, and you can run your own hardware straight off the ONT’s Ethernet port.
One thing worth correcting from how this section usually gets written, including an earlier draft of this one: I already checked, and my ONT’s handoff to the G3100 is Ethernet, not coax — confirmed on the G3100’s own status page. So the step every other guide treats as the first hurdle — calling Verizon to get the Ethernet port activated — doesn’t apply to my line at all. It’s already there. I don’t know if that’s because it came that way or because whoever installed it years ago set it up that way; I don’t have that history. If your ONT is still on coax, that call is the piece I genuinely haven’t done and can’t walk you through firsthand — though if you’re stuck on coax for now, what I actually measured running MoCA 2.5 over coax in my rental is the honest picture of what that path gets you.
What would actually stand between me and doing this, if I decided to:
- The DHCP lease binds to the G3100’s MAC address. Releasing it before swapping in another router is the widely reported fix, and it’s the one step in this whole process I haven’t personally tested.
- Nothing else, as far as I can tell — no coax-to-Ethernet call needed, no truck roll, since that part’s already sorted on this line.
That actually makes the bypass a smaller project than the rest of the internet implies for a setup like mine — which is a little bit of an anticlimax, but it’s the honest state of things. I haven’t done it because I haven’t needed to, not because there’s a real obstacle in the way.
If and when I do, I’ll update this section with the same level of detail as everything else here — the DHCP release, what breaks, real before/after numbers. Until then it stays marked as untested, which is the difference between a record and a rewrite of someone else’s.
Do You Even Need a Different Router?
If the G3100 is meeting your needs, the honest answer is no. The cases where it genuinely constrains you:
- You’re above 1 Gbps and want the full tier reliably. That’s the whole reason I’m planning a 10GbE home network from scratch in the new place.
- You want VLANs, segmentation, or self-hosting. This is why I have the Araknis.
- You want Wi-Fi coverage the G3100 can’t deliver alone. Note that the fix here is usually wired access points, not a different router — separating routing from Wi-Fi was the single biggest quality-of-life change in my setup, and it’s what makes the G3100’s mediocre Wi-Fi stop mattering. It also depends entirely on having cable runs that can carry it, which is why I started by inspecting the structured cabling in my NYC condo before buying anything.

I run Araknis, which is AV-integrator gear not sold at retail — it’s what got installed during a renovation, not what I’d tell you to buy. UniFi is the closest retail equivalent.
FAQ
Do I have to replace the Verizon G3100? No. If it’s meeting your needs it’s a competent Wi-Fi 6 router. The reasons to add your own hardware are segmentation, multi-gig throughput, and coverage — not the G3100 being bad.
Can I keep the G3100 and add my own router? Yes, and that’s my setup. You’ll be running double-NAT unless you configure IP Passthrough. In my case it hasn’t mattered — see the double-NAT breakdown above.
Does the G3100 have a bridge mode? No dedicated toggle, and on firmware 3.7.0.5 I could not find IP Passthrough anywhere in the admin panel either — checked both Wi-Fi settings and Network Settings → IPv4 Address Distribution, which only exposes standard DHCP server configuration (subnet mask, dynamic range). If your firmware exposes IP Passthrough, mine doesn’t appear to. The only way to avoid double-NAT on this version, as far as I can tell, is manually disabling the G3100’s DHCP server and routing functions — which would conflict with using it as a Wi-Fi failover, since you’d also need to leave its radios on.
Can I use the G3100 as a backup Wi-Fi network? Yes — that’s what mine does. This firmware has no manual channel or transmit power control at all, so there’s no tuning guidance to give — leave it on defaults and let it do its own thing.

- Ubiquiti UniFi Long-Range Access Point — the closest retail equivalent to the Araknis APs I run behind the G3100. Worth it if your problem is coverage; it does nothing for you if your problem is the 1 Gbps tier itself.
- Netgear Nighthawk (2.5G WAN) — the step up that actually matters above 1 Gbps, because of the 2.5GbE WAN port. Overkill on a gigabit plan like mine.
- TP-Link Archer AX series — fine for an apartment on a 1 Gbps plan. Honestly, if that’s your situation, the G3100 you already have is doing the same job.
